Life and the goings on of….

Friday, May 2, 2008

Ok, so much to the disappointment of our relatives, this post will be left wanting of offspring photos. I don’t want to bore everyone and turn this into a “baby blog”, so nothing for you all today!

Life has been going on. We’re getting to know our boy and what he likes which makes it easier. He’s becoming more aware and will gaze at our faces which is really nice. Can’t wait for the smiles and they shouldn’t be too far away…..

John has started up with his new weekend daytime hours which leaves us supporting each other through the week and at nights which is pretty essential when every day is BIG and we have to go through the screaming sessions passing Leo backwards and forwards.

I have deferred uni once again as the concept of going back to study to that degree was unfathomable in July, so now that will begin for me in February next year. I’m pretty darn happy about that! Life as I knew it is pretty far from my mind right now.

What else has been happening? Not much really….Ruby has a cold brewing, we’ve been doing lots of activities with her (playgroup, Mainly Music, etc etc)- really throwing ourselves into the parenting gig, I’ve had a nasty bout of mastitis (read: OUCH!!), John’s started doing some music again and I have been tossing around the idea of doing a doula course sometime in the future (just thinking about it at the moment) as Leo’s birth experience and the pregnancy has had a pretty profound effect on me……so life goes ever on……..

I’ll leave you with a few things I’m absolutely loving about life at the moment though, to make a change from the drama of caring for a newborn!

1. Co-sleeping with our kids. There really is nothing like having a big family bed, nuzzling into Leo’s beautiful head in the middle of a night feed and knowing that John and Ruby are having Autumn night cuddles too.

2. Watching Leo sleep and listening to his little sighs and gurgles. It doesn’t happen as much as I would like!

3. Soaking this new little boy of ours up, smelling his soft, beautiful skin which went from smelling like birth to breastmilk in mere days. New baby smell is the best!

4. The feeling of quiet after our two kids have finally fallen asleep at night. Ahhhh…pure exhaustion.

5. The short and sweet moments of happiness that Ruby and Leo share before one is crying! Watching them interact is both great and stressful.

6. The weather up here! Cold, crisp nights, a doona on the bed and simply stunning warm, sunny days. The ocean is glittering like a jewel lately.

7. Wearing scarves and layers again. Yes, it’s cold enough (at times). MMmmm. Toasty.

8. Chatting on the phone to my Mum. I’ve needed those talks.

9. Connecting and gathering with other parents of like mind. Generating community and support networks.

10. The rare times that I get to read bedtime stories to Ruby

11. Watching John with our son. He is the MOST amazing papa. We are truly blessed to have him.

12. Baths with Leo. A surefire way to calm the beast and a really lovely bonding experience.

13. Gardening. It’s a great family activity and for Winter we have planted lettuce, silverbeet, strawberries, bok choy, spinach, tomatoes, corriander, snow peas, chives, peas, broccoli etc. We also have a nice new dwarf lemon tree. Tomorrow we will be planting Leo’s placenta!
