Busy Springtime

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

We have been absolutely flat out here or so it seems. Soaking up the springtime loveliness with friends and family has been wonderful.

A couple of weeks ago with had friends over for Indian and being the amazing random people they are, well, they turned up in full Bollywood costume. I love you guys! You always make us smile! The night was both chaos and completely normal with Ruby burning herself on a sparkler and crying for about four hours whilst carrying around a empty honey bucket full of ice, in which she periodically stuck her smarting finger. Much grand food, music and of course, brilliant company.

Leo has been teething non stop for a couple of weeks. The two bottom offenders are just about up. I can’t wait!! He is absolutely enormous now. 6 months old already! Time has been utterly flying!

We went and revelled in the sunshine the other day with some other beautiful folks. Strawberry picking at Eumundi was the highlight of the week! I think we ate more than we could carry without a doubt. After that we went and whiled away some time at the Eumundi markets follows by languid cups of tea all afternoon with our beautiful mates. Ahhh, this is the life!

My sister was visiting that week which was really great. Ruby loved having her company and delighted in the many beach and park trips with her. We all braved the beach for the first swim since Winter. Completely lush. There really is nothing like being tossed about it the waves is there?

On a more serious and sensible side we’ve been researching education for our kids in the last couple of months. It became apparent that we are just not happy to surrender up our precious babies to the standard schooling system so we delved deeper into all our options from public school, Montessori, Steiner, homeschooling, natural learning/unschooling. We’ve also been reading lots of John Holt, Robin Grille and lots of other wise people’s works on education/parenting. It was a huge feat! Whilst we haven’t come to a complete decision we are happy with Ruby going to the Noosa Pengari Steiner School for now but until then (and it’s a couple of years away yet) we will keep on unschooling/natural learning and following our kids’ leads. We’ll see how it goes but I know that so long as we provide a rich and stimulating environment these kids are going to continue to flourish in body, mind and spirit. There is just so much learning going on without us even realising from baking, gardening, festivals, social interactions, art, music, dance and the odd praying mantis, the whole world is their classroom!. I’ve added some links in the blogroll if you’d like to find out more about unschooling/natural learning and the like.

One thing is for sure (and I guess it comes at no big surprise) but our kids certainly will be doing the alternative learning/schooling of some sorts.

Anyway, that’s it for now……hope the sun is shining wherever you are!
